The Japanese term for Castella is カステラ, and in English, it’s Castella
It is said that the original term カステラ comes from Portuguese, introduced to Nagasaki in the mid-16th century, and later spread throughout Japan.
In Taiwan, it was previously known as “Honey Cake” or “Nagasaki Cake”.
Currently, the most well-known Castella shop among Taiwanese travelers is Fukusaya.
This Fukusaya カステラ was bought at a duty-free shop in Fukuoka for ¥1000.

Fukusaya’s logo features a bat.

After removing the outer packaging, there’s another paper box inside.

Upon opening the paper box, there’s another layer of paper wrapping.
There are three layers in total: the leftmost is the outermost layer, and the rightmost is the innermost layer.

Paper on the cake.

Another explanatory paper.
(So much packaging~ XD)

The cake is revealed.

The cake itself is a bit rough, but it’s very soft and quite delicious.
I prefer this kind of plain cake.
It’s much better than those cakes with lots of cream.

The top layer is no different from a regular cake.

The bottom of the cake is also wrapped in a layer of paper.

After peeling off the paper, you can see the bottom looks like this.
There are small white sugar crystals, giving a slightly crunchy texture.
I thought it would be overly sweet,
but it’s fine; just have a cup of tea to balance it out…

That’s a simple review of Fukusaya’s Castella~
Finally,
my personal rating: ★★★★ (4)
I think it’s quite tasty, but unfortunately, I can’t eat too many sweets, so one slice is enough for me.
If I have the chance to visit Kyushu again, I’ll consider this and Hakata Torimon as souvenirs~
Purchase location: Duty-free shop at Hakata Airport International Terminal after customs
Cost: ¥1000
Rating criteria:
Five stars: Super delicious; makes you want to find it in Taiwan!!
Four stars: Tasty; would buy again if visiting Japan
Three stars: Not bad; worth trying once
Two stars: Average; buy only if you want to try the flavor
One star: Never again (potential disappointment)
