Mie Prefecture – Akafuku and Akafuku Ice Cream in Ise, A Must Try Experience

Akafuku is already one of the most representative desserts in Mie Prefecture, especially near Ise. You can see advertisements and signs everywhere. And now, they even have stores at Kansai Airport and Chubu Centrair International Airport. Moreover, convenience stores at Kyoto Station’s Hachijoguchi exit also sell them. It’s really amazing!

Akafuku is a type of mochi wrapped in red bean paste… The pattern on it represents the water of the Isuzu River… 8 Akafuku for 700 yen.

This is what they look like when you pour them out. Japanese desserts are all similar, they are all good at cooking red beans~ And the basic rule is “so sweet it can kill you”.

In addition, after visiting Ise Grand Shrine, the staff from Mie Prefecture kindly helped us queue up and buy ice cream here. They even saved us a good spot.

This is a shaved ice dessert similar to Akafuku Ice?, topped with matcha syrup. It’s so delicious! It’s sweet and bitter at the same time. ¥500 (limited to summer season)

Why is it called Akafuku Ice? It’s because we add Akafuku into the ice!

Since matcha syrup is also very sweet, it is recommended to mix it with ice to dilute the sweetness a bit. Then, take a bite of red bean paste, a bite of mochi, and another bite of matcha ice cream. In the summer, this is the perfect bowl to have. If you want to recommend matcha ice cream in Kyoto, I think you should try Nakamura Tokichi’s. And if you’re in Mie Prefecture, you should try Akafuku ice cream.

I think that ice in this state is the most delicious when it is close to 0 degrees Celsius. Eating too much or eating quickly won’t give you a headache.

Above is the situation of me eating Akafuku and Akafuku Ice…

Most wagashi have red bean paste as the filling, but Akafuku uses mochi instead. It’s quite unique.
If you’re in Ise, it’s a must-try, whether it’s Akafuku or Akafuku ice cream.
Just a reminder though, it’s quite sweet, so don’t eat too much!
