【Hokkaido】Biei Daimaru Curry Udon – だいまる

Daimaru Curry Udon (だいまる) is one of the few famous restaurants in the Biei area.
When I visited in 2009, it was closed, so I missed out.
This time, it was open, so I had to try their famous curry udon~

We came here after visiting the Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls, around 3 PM.
So, there were very few people~

As soon as I saw the menu, I decided to order this.

The table setting and the situation at the next table, which hadn’t been cleared yet.

It seems the restaurant has a second floorㄝ, this is the first floor.

I ordered a portion of fried chicken, which was quite substantial, along with a beer, totaling ¥1000.
(One was ¥550, the other ¥450)

However, it wasn’t good.
The fried chicken was cooked with the skin on, but it wasn’t handled well,
so the chicken had a strong gamey taste.
Honestly, the fried chicken at Gyoza no Ohsho is much better.

Although the chicken retained its juices, the gamey taste was overwhelming… XD

Next, the ramen and pork cutlet bowl set for ¥880.
Let’s skip that for now.

Here’s the vegetable curry udon I ordered for ¥880.
The top left is cheese, which was delicious.

Baked curry udon.

The curry was fragrant, and the udon had a nice chewiness, quite tasty.
However, the taste of the vegetables was mediocre, not as sweet as expected,
probably overpowered by the curry.

The vegetable soup was very bland.

The salad was refreshing and acceptable.

Next, introducing the ramen and pork cutlet bowl set my wife ordered.
This is the ramen.

Oh my, I’ve never had such a unique ramen.
The noodles felt undercooked,
and the broth had an incredibly strong gamey taste.
Compared to the fried chicken, the gamey taste of the chicken was nothing.
This bowl of ramen is probably my second biggest ramen failure ever (the first being at Gyoza no Ohsho).
Usually, I finish what my wife can’t, but this time I gave up too.

As for the pork cutlet bowl, I only ate one piece of pork.
The taste was just okay, not terrible.

In conclusion,
my personal rating: ★★★ (3 stars for the curry udon); ★ (1 star for the ramen and fried chicken).

The curry udon was quite standard, so it’s worth trying.
But what’s up with the ramen and fried chicken?
How can they be this unique~
I still remember the terrible ramen at Gyoza no Ohsho, where the noodles were clumped together,
but this ramen was even worse~ Oh my~
I can only say there’s always someone better out there~
As for the fried chicken, cooking it with the skin on and still having such a strong gamey taste is quite a failure.
Honestly, my mom’s fried chicken is better than theirs.
Of course, Gyoza no Ohsho’s is better too… XD
So, if you come here, just stick to the udon and don’t expect too much from the other dishes.
(In the end, the total for two people was ¥2760)

Rating standards:
Five stars: Super delicious; makes you want to come back for more.
Four stars: Tasty; feels good after eating, but not memorable.
Three stars: Not bad; if you’re nearby, you can give it a try.
Two stars: Average; if you don’t want to risk a bad meal, it’s okay to eat.
One star: Not my taste; potential disaster.
