Fukuoka Transportation – 3 Routes to Fukuoka Airport – Taking the Subway from Hakata to Fukuoka Airport and Departure Procedures

First, we need to understand that Fukuoka Airport is divided into Domestic and International Terminals. As foreign visitors, we will be using the International Terminal.
When traveling from Hakata city center to the International Terminal of Fukuoka Airport, there are mainly three ways:
1. Take the Fukuoka City Subway to the Domestic Terminal, then transfer to the free shuttle bus to the International Terminal.
2. Take a bus directly to the International Terminal.
3. Take a taxi to the International Terminal.

The third option is the fastest and most convenient, costing around ¥1600 to ¥2000.
For the second option, I have written a separate article.
Next, let’s introduce the first method.

Fukuoka Airport Map

Since Fukuoka Airport is divided into Domestic and International Terminals, and they are not located together~
Although you can take the Fukuoka City Subway to the Domestic Terminal, the subway does not go to the International Terminal, so you need to use the free shuttle bus to travel between the terminals.

Transportation from Hakata to Fukuoka Airport

This time, I started from the Fukuoka City Subway “Hakata” Station.
When we arrive at the subway station, as usual, let’s first check the route map and fare.
It costs only ¥260 to get to Fukuoka Airport, and it’s just two stops away.
Among the big cities I’ve visited, this one is relatively close to the city center.

Let’s buy a ticket. If you are using Sugoca, ICOCA, or Suica, you can skip this step.

Press the amount, insert the fare, and you’re good to go.

¥250 (this was the fare at the time, it has now increased to ¥260)

Go through the automatic ticket gate.
If you purchase a ticket with cash, insert the ticket into the slot and retrieve it as you pass through.
If using an IC card, simply tap the card as you pass through.

Wait for the train. Since it’s the subway, trains are frequent.
There is a train every 6-8 minutes on average, which is quite frequent.

When we take the subway to Fukuoka Airport Station (Japanese: K13 福岡空港)
The disembarkation point is on the B2 level. You need to go up to B1 before exiting the ticket gate.
At this point, look for the sign (red box in the picture below) that says “International Terminal Shuttle Bus Stop.”
There is an escalator here to go up to the first floor (red arrow in the picture below), so don’t foolishly take the stairs.

Once you reach the first floor, you will be at the Domestic Terminal of Fukuoka Airport. Less than 100 meters ahead, there is a bus stop..
(There are two stops at the Domestic Terminal, you can board at either one)
From here, you can take the bus to the International Terminal.
This bus is free!!
There are about 7-8 buses per hour, and it takes about 10 minutes to get from the Domestic Terminal to the International Terminal.

Since the International Terminal is on the other side of the Domestic Terminal, separated by the runway, it is quite far.
Once you reach the International Terminal, you can get off the bus.

Fukuoka Airport Departure Procedures

1. Check-in and Baggage Drop

Head straight to the third floor to check in!!

First, line up!!
That’s right ~ The procedure here starts with queuing up!!
You need to queue first, then have your checked luggage go through the X-ray machine for inspection.

Queuing takes a lot of time, but finally, it’s almost our turn.

2. Check-in and Baggage Drop

After inspecting the luggage, you can then bring it over for check-in and baggage drop.
Of course, check-in involves queuing again~

3. Security Check

After getting your boarding pass and checking in your luggage, it’s time to go through security.
Not surprisingly, there’s more queuing at this stage.
This is when your carry-on luggage is inspected! If you have any liquids, remember to dispose of them.
So, remember to finish your drinks.

Since we’re flying with China Airlines, there are quite a few Korean flights around this time.
So, the queue is very long.

What a long line!

4. Immigration and Customs

After inspecting your carry-on luggage, it’s time for immigration!
No photos allowed here, so I didn’t take any. Remember to have your passport ready for inspection.

5. Duty-Free Shopping

After passing through immigration, it’s time for some pre-flight shopping!!

Chick-shaped cakes, whether they taste good or not is up to personal preference~

Fukusaya, famous Nagasaki Castella from Kyushu.

Ready to board the plane.

That’s the entire process from Hakata to Fukuoka Airport, all the way to boarding the plane~
Hope this helps those who need it!!

Additional Information

1. There are direct buses from Tenjin and Hakata Station areas to Fukuoka Airport International Terminal.

2. For details on the shuttle bus between the domestic and international terminals, click:Here
I now usually take a taxi directly from Hakata Station, and the fare is usually under ¥2000.

3. From buying the subway ticket to entering the Fukuoka Airport International Terminal, it took 30 minutes.
Then from luggage inspection to completing immigration, it took 42 minutes.

4. There are many people departing from Fukuoka Airport, and the crowd at the duty-free shops after departure is even more overwhelming.
If you plan to buy souvenirs, it’s best to purchase and check them in before departure to avoid time-consuming shopping after passing through immigration.
