[Keelung] Exclusive Eslite Store! The Most Beautiful Showa-Era Japanese Bookstore

The exclusive Eslite store in Keelung has officially opened! It has quickly become one of the hottest travel spots and Instagram check-in points in Keelung. Debuting on November 6, 2021, this limited-time Eslite store combines the century-old Showa-era Japanese architecture with the historical and cultural features of the Keelung Shawan Historical and Cultural Park. It gives you the feeling of being in Japan in an instant, making it a great alternative for those who can’t travel abroad!

The limited-time Eslite store in Keelung includes two historical buildings within the Shawan Historical and Cultural Park: the “Fort Commander’s Residence” and the “Fort Commander’s Officers’ Quarters.” Both are significant historical landmarks in Keelung.

Located by the roadside, the Fort Commander’s Residence was built in 1931 during the Japanese colonial period. Also known as the “Flowing Water Bus Company Residence” or the “Li Residence on Zhongzheng Road,” its exterior retains the Japanese wooden design. Back then, it faced Taiwan’s first seawater swimming pool, the Dashawan Seawater Swimming Pool, offering excellent views and making it a high-end residence of the time.

To adapt to Keelung’s rainy climate, the Fort Commander’s Residence features specially designed rain shelters, surrounding drainage ditches, and elevated indoor flooring. Unlike traditional wooden foundations, it uses brick walls instead. Inside, the building boasts Zen-inspired tatami mats paired with washi paper sliding doors. The original structures of the bathroom and living quarters are well-preserved, exuding a strong old Japanese house atmosphere, making you feel like you’re truly inside a Japanese building.

However, due to current pandemic measures, it is recommended to keep your mask on while taking photos indoors. If you want to take pictures with the Fort Commander’s Residence, you can also stroll around the outdoor courtyard after visiting the indoor space. Some angles are great for photos too!

On the other side, the “Fort Commander’s Officers’ Quarters” has been transformed by Eslite into a bookstore featuring over a thousand themed books, stationery, vinyl records, and unique souvenirs, presenting the diverse aspects of Keelung through reading.

The limited-time Eslite store in Keelung is expected to run for three months, until February 6, 2022. During this period, more than 50 cultural and artistic events will be held. If you’re interested, make sure to plan a day trip to Keelung and take a stroll around!
