One-Day and Two-Day Itineraries in Tainan

This time, we’ve planned a two-day, one-night trip in Tainan, primarily using scooters. If your itinerary includes urban or nearby suburban attractions, the journey will be quite comfortable, and you won’t have to worry about finding parking spots.

What are the popular attractions in Tainan?

Tainan has so many attractions that you could spend days exploring! Besides the well-known historical sites like Anping Fort, Chihkan Tower, and Tainan Confucius Temple, Anping District also has famous spots like Sicao Green Tunnel, Taijiang National Park, and Anping Tree House. In the suburbs, you can visit Beimen Crystal Church and Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields. In recent years, Tainan’s urban area has also seen the rise of new attractions like HeLe Plaza and Tainan Art Museum Building 2, offering plenty of options for your itinerary.

Tainan Food Recommendations

Tainan is famous for its food, especially Tainan beef noodles! However, if you’re like Philos and can’t eat beef, there are still plenty of other delicious options, such as the famous Tainan shrimp rolls, braised pork rice, and Tainan rice cakes. There are also many local bubble tea brands, with several well-known chains originating from Tainan. Be sure to give them a try!

How to Plan a One-Day or Two-Day Trip in Tainan

When planning a trip to Tainan, it’s recommended to allocate at least two days for more flexibility in your itinerary. For a two-day trip, you can spend both days exploring the urban area or dedicate one day to the suburbs. However, keep in mind that Tainan’s temperatures can be quite high, so if you’re visiting in the summer, make sure to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. Autumn and winter are ideal seasons for a scooter tour in Tainan!

Sicao Green TunnelSicao Green Tunnel

Located within the Taijiang National Park in Tainan, the Sicao Green Tunnel is one of the city’s timeless attractions. Taking a bamboo raft through the tunnel feels like being in a Taiwanese version of the Amazon. The Sicao Green Tunnel is in Tainan’s Annan District, about a 10-15 minute scooter ride from the city center. You can also visit the nearby Taijiang National Park Visitor Center. The tunnel is next to the Sicao Dazhong Temple, and if you visit on a weekday, there are scheduled trips at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM (additional trips may be added depending on the crowd). The ticket price is 200 NTD. Since we visited on a weekday, we easily got a spot at the front of the boat, making it easy to take great photos.

Anping Tree House and Tait & Co. Merchant House

Anping Tree House is one of the popular attractions in Tainan’s Anping District. Together with the adjacent Tait & Co. Merchant House and the Zhu Jiu-Ying Memorial Hall, it forms a park area. For an entrance fee of 50 NTD, you can visit all three places. Anping Tree House has been a hotspot for Tainan travel for years, and its charm remains undiminished. The unique feature of Anping Tree House is the symbiosis of the abandoned old building and the ancient banyan trees. With government restoration and planning, it has become a favorite spot for both international tourists and Instagram enthusiasts.

Deyang Ship Cultural ParkDeyang Ship Cultural Park

Deyang Ship Cultural Park is Taiwan’s first warship museum, created from the retired Deyang Ship 925 of the national military. Originally owned by the U.S. Navy and involved in battles like the Korean War, it was retired from the Taiwanese military in 2005 and transformed into the Deyang Ship Cultural Park. The park retains the ship’s internal structure and features, making it an ideal place for parents to bring their children to learn about warship structures and characteristics. Currently, the Deyang Ship also hosts limited-time exhibitions of Transformers and mechanical dinosaurs, so photography enthusiasts should seize the opportunity to visit.

Yuguang Island

If you plan to visit the Deyang Ship Cultural Park, you can also include a trip to the nearby Yuguang Island. A few years ago, Yuguang Island was a popular Instagram check-in spot, mainly because of a tall tower made from oyster racks on the beach, which became a landmark. Although the tower has since been removed, it is still highly recommended to visit Yuguang Island in the evening to enjoy the sea breeze and watch the sunset. The slightly cool sea breeze, combined with Tainan’s hot weather, provides a refreshing experience.

Blessing of the Big Fish

Located in the Tainan Harbor Historical Park, the installation art “Blessing of the Big Fish” has become a new attraction in Tainan over the past couple of years. Last time, I visited during the day and missed the dreamy moment when the “Blessing of the Big Fish” is illuminated at night. The design concept is that Taiwan is like a big whale, unconditionally embracing everyone who comes to the island throughout different eras. This aligns with Tainan’s history of colonization and foreign invasions. It is highly recommended to visit in the evening, as the twilight enhances the visual appeal of the big fish.

Hele Plaza

Hele Plaza, a new attraction in Tainan, was selected by the globally renowned magazine Dezeen as one of the “Most Anticipated Buildings of 2020.” Opened in 2020, this urban lagoon concept park is the largest water-friendly park in the city, located at the intersection of Zhongzheng Road and Jinhua Road. Unfortunately, due to recent water shortages in the south, the park’s pools are currently dry, creating a unique, limited-time landscape. Hopefully, on the next visit to Tainan, the pools will be filled again.

Blueprint Cultural and Creative Park

Blueprint Cultural and Creative Park, located on Ximen Road in Tainan’s West Central District, is a micro cultural and creative base similar to Huashan 1914 Creative Park in Taipei or Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung. The park’s most famous feature, the “3D Blueprint,” is inspired by the popular “Ruins Blueprint” on Haian Road. With its preserved Japanese-era architecture, Blueprint Cultural and Creative Park is a perennial favorite for Instagram-worthy photos.

Shennong Street

Shennong Street is another timeless attraction in Tainan. Whether day or night, it exudes a unique charm. During a previous visit, I stayed near Shennong Street and took a nighttime stroll. This time, I made a point to experience it during the day. The street is lined with distinctive old houses and creative market shops. At night, special lighting installations and small bars at the end of the street make it lively and vibrant.

During the Lunar New Year, Shennong Street is adorned with various lanterns.

Every alley wall is a perfect photo backdrop.

The alleys of Shennong Street are full of character.

Tainan Art Museum Building 2

Tainan Art Museum Building 2, located near Hayashi Department Store, is a new Instagram hotspot that opened during the Lunar New Year. Designed by architect Shih Chao-yung and Japan’s Shigeru Ban Architects, the building features large white brick walls and a pentagonal structure inspired by the blooming phoenix flower. During my visit, it was still in the trial operation phase and crowded with visitors. I hope to visit again when it’s less busy.

Beimen Crystal Church

Beimen Crystal Church, located in Tainan’s Beimen District, is about an hour’s drive from the city center. It is Taiwan’s first church designed by a government agency, featuring a white exterior and large floor-to-ceiling windows reminiscent of Guam’s S.T Laguna Chapel. Primarily a wedding photography venue, it is also open to the public, attracting many visitors on weekends.

Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields

Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields, located in the Beimen District of Tainan, is a must-visit when planning a trip to the Crystal Church. As the first salt field in Beimen and the oldest tile-paved salt field site in Taiwan, it holds significant historical value. Its proximity to the sea and its westward orientation make it an ideal spot for capturing stunning sunsets on clear days. Despite being a popular tourist destination, it continues to attract photography enthusiasts and influencers who come to capture its breathtaking sunset views.
