The Sanboin of DaigoJi Temple – A Beautiful Garden Designed Personally by Toyotomi Hideyoshi

The Sanboin of DaigoJi Temple’s Cherry Blossom Viewing

The DaigoJi Temple was built in 874 AD and is one of the temples of the Tendai sect. Its architecture and gardens are incredibly beautiful, representing Japanese culture and architectural style. Some famous buildings include the five-story pagoda and the Golden Hall. It is now recognized as one of Kyoto’s World Cultural Heritage sites. Additionally, DaigoJi Temple is also a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in Kyoto. The cherry blossoms here bloom early, and the best time to enjoy them is around late March.

Today we are visiting Sanboin Temple, which was built in 1115. Among the important cultural assets, the main study hall, which overlooks the entire garden, is one of the representative buildings in the architectural style of the Momoyama period and has been designated as a national treasure. The architectural style of the main study hall refers to the style of aristocratic residences during the Heian period in Japan. Additionally, the Sanboin Temple garden, which is a special historical site and scenic spot, was personally designed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi for the “”Daigo Flower Viewing Festival”” in 1598, and still retains the splendid atmosphere of the Momoyama period.

Since it was already late when I came here to see cherry blossoms in 2010, I didn’t have time to visit any of the pavilions. This time, it was a bit better as I managed to visit Sanboin Temple…XD In other words, I might have to come two more times, otherwise I won’t be able to see everything. The ticket costs ¥600.

Introduction to Sanboin Temple

Cherry Blossoms Outside Sanboin Temple

To enter the Sanboin Temple for a visit, as mentioned earlier, you need to take off your shoes. This is because most of the items here are important cultural relics, and it is also one of the national treasures.

After visiting Sanboin Temple… XD That’s right, photography is prohibited in Sanboin Temple~ And even the gardens inside are also off-limits for photography, so after strolling around, I don’t really have any impression~ Although there are some nice sights inside, I feel that Nijo Castle has much more grandeur in comparison~ This is the cherry blossom in front of Sanboin Temple~

Still the pine tree at the entrance.

The cherry blossoms in front of Sanboin Temple are quite impressive~

The photo is not well-taken~

The Tang Gate, which is blocked, offers a view of the Goshichi-no-Kiri crest of the Toyotomi family. DaigoJi Temple became famous because Toyotomi Hideyoshi came here to enjoy cherry blossoms.

I forgot where I saw this term at the Gate of the Deva Kings: “Hengha Erjiang Gate”. What an impressive term it is!

On the roof of a certain place, there are lions.

Cherry Blossoms at the Entrance of DaigoJi Temple

Because it was my second time visiting DaigoJi Temple, I knew that photography was prohibited inside Sanbōin. For those who wish to take photos, please be aware. If you want to see more cherry blossoms at DaigoJi Temple, you can refer to the 2010 travelogue: “Cherry Blossoms in front of DaigoJi Temple”.
