John into the world of wine culture and fine wines. My father Herman Howard Isacs was a 20th century pioneer in the appreciation, collection and promotion of fine wines in the United States as well as a recognized wine expert in France and the rest of Europe.

Exposed to the culture of fine cuisine and wine since early childhood and has traveled to more than 80 countries visiting many of the world’s most renowned wine regions, wineries, distilleries and restaurants. Lived and worked in Greater China for over three decades and is fluent in Chinese and English.

One of Asia’s most experienced wine and spirits judges. Also, one of only a handful of foreigners certified by ISGC & IWGC Organizing Committee and China Wine Commission to judge Chinese baijiu.

Published Books & Magazines

Published about 70 bilingual food and wine related books and magazines in greater China – the ISACS Guides, which the “100 Great Wines in China” was awarded “Best International Guide” by “ComitatoGrandi Cru d’Italia at Vinitaly”, an association comprising 120 of Italy’s largest and most important and historic producers. This is the first and only wine book from China to win this prestigious international award, as well as the only award granted to Asia countries in 2011.

Shanghai is home but as a wine writer I spend a great deal of time traveling to wine regions and wine events all over the globe.  Last weekend I was in Singapore to celebrate the Grandi Vini Group’s 25th Anniversary in the graceful colonial atmosphere of the Fullerton Hotel. Grandi Vini was established in 1987 in Rome by a group of leading wine producers from Italy’s most acclaimed wines regions with the goal of collectively marketing and selling their wines globally. The group now consists of eight wineries from six regions and is one of the most successful and long-lived wine groups of its kind anywhere. The member wineries export about 80 percent of their production to over 70 countries. Considering the independent nature of Italian people and companies, this cooperative effort has been no mean feat.

When Valentine’s Day is also the first day of the Year of the Tiger, how do we graciously combine the romance of Valentine’s Day with the necessary communal celebration of the Chinese New Year?
